In March 2026, Twitch streamer Hasan Piker traveled to Cuba as part of CodePink's "Nuestra América Convoy," an international aid caravan that later became the subject of a U.S. Treasury investigation into possible sanctions violations.[1][2]
The 2026 trip
The convoy traveled to Havana from March 18 to 24, 2026, and was reported to include 650 delegates from 33 countries and 120 organizations, among them CodePink co-founder Medea Benjamin and the Irish rap group Kneecap.[3] Organizers said the convoy delivered an estimated 40 tons of supplies, and described its purpose as providing humanitarian aid, including medical supplies to pediatric hospitals, during the U.S. oil blockade.[4] Piker announced the trip in a March 10 Instagram post reading "I'M GOING TO CUBA."[5]
Fox News reported that members of the delegation were believed to have stayed at a hotel on the U.S. State Department's "Cuba Restricted List," which Washington links to the Cuban government. The same reporting described Piker as staying at a 5-star hotel with rooms priced at $130 to $520 per night and private generators, at a time when much of the island was experiencing daily blackouts.[6] In a Fox News opinion column, David Marcus characterized Piker as having been photographed in an outfit estimated at around $5,000.[7]
Federal investigation (OFAC subpoena)
In May 2026, Fox News Digital reported that Piker had been served with a subpoena by the U.S. Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) over his participation in the trip, and that he was one of around 40 Americans under federal scrutiny over aid convoys and flotillas to Cuba in 2026.[8] Newsweek reported that it had not been able to independently confirm the subpoenas.[9] According to that reporting, the subpoenas, described as "Requests for Information," sought financial, logistical, and communications records and examined whether participants financed travel, coordinated logistics, or carried out prohibited transactions involving Cuba.[10]
A subpoena from OFAC is an administrative action rather than a criminal indictment, and as of this writing no charges have been announced against Piker.[11] Reporting indicated the matter could remain a civil OFAC proceeding or escalate to a criminal process under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, and that it was disclosed alongside a broader Department of Justice and Treasury probe of roughly 145 pro-Cuba organizations.[12]
Wider political context
The subpoenas came amid a wider U.S. pressure campaign on Havana. The Trump administration reinstated a full oil blockade on Cuba in February 2026, and in the period before Piker's subpoena became public the U.S. indicted 94-year-old former Cuban president Raúl Castro.[13] Piker had publicly condemned that indictment.[14]
Piker's response
On a Sunday livestream, Piker addressed the probe directly, telling viewers the situation was "not great," dismissing the investigation as nonsense, and joking with chat about being "freed."[15] He maintained that everything the delegation did had been cleared by the Treasury in advance. According to GameDaily, he has not publicly produced proof of such communication.[16] Piker has said he contacted David Adler of Progressive International before joining the convoy.[17]
